'In the Mood for Love' at 20: A Lesson in Longing
A Lesson in Longing
For those unfamiliar with the works of Hong Kong-based filmmaker and auteur Wong Kar-Wai, it would be easy to assume that his most well-known feature In the Mood for Love (2000), which turns 20 today, is an uncomplicated tale of courtship and romance. However, in Wong’s narrational realm, the thematics of love are rarely delivered without the entanglements of repression, guilt, and pain — familiar nuances of the human condition that universally afflict his exquisite charac...
JiWon Choi: The South Korean jewelry designer breathing Y2K culture into her creations
The South Korean jewelry designer breathing Y2K culture into her creations
Among the latest of cultural exports from South Korea within the last few years — a copious abundance of K-pop album releases, band debuts and tours, stirring K-dramas, and a cultural reinterest in the street fashion of Seoul — jewellery designer Jiwon Choi has been steadily working under the radar since 2017, crafting her eponymous brand. Adopting a playful, tongue-in-cheek approach to her youthful designs, Choi often...
Can you do a reading for me?: Demystifying the Art of Tarot Reading
Feature photos by Liz Hew for Bobblehaus
Demystifying the Art of Tarot Reading
I can’t pinpoint the exact moment I realised that I wanted to learn the art of tarot reading. The fascination could have been several years in the making; I didn’t grow up in a religious household, but my childhood had been inundated with spiritual and holistic practices, and plenty of symbolism. From the crystals I used to collect as a child; to armfuls of lotus flowers, pixiu (protective Chinese mythical creature...
ON THE IMMERSIVE DIGITAL LANDSCAPE OF ‘CATHARSIS'
London’s answer to CONNECT, BTS questions the relationship between technology and nature
LIZ HEW
Catharsis: the word brings to mind undulating ocean waves breaking upon a shore, leaving behind a white frothy residue as they draw back; renewal and rebirth; a powerful release; a deep exhale after a held breath; letting out a long-suppressed cry; a hopeful butterfly emerging from a spindly cocoon. Catharsis is also the name of Danish artist Jakob Kudsk St...

THANK YOU FOR THE VENOM: On My Chemical Romance and I
On My Chemical Romance and I
When I first gleaned over the flurry of headlines announcing the reunion of seminal five-piece emo band My Chemical Romance, I was immediately reminded of how it felt to be a fourteen-year-old again. At the time, I’d sported a questionable asymmetrical mop of a fringe that concealed a quadrant of my face like an self-induced eye patch. It accompanied a generous hand of smudged kohl eyeliner and a pair of scuffed Converses: a uniform of sorts, a proud display of my...
JESS YOUNG: FOUNDER OF 'BOYS IN POLISH'
“I’m a Scorpio!”

It’s around 7pm on a crisp October evening when I meet Jess Young (@jessyoung__) in the grand courtyard of Somerset House. Summer has given away to the shortening days of Autumn, shadows lengthen as sunsets arrive earlier and earlier. Huddled around a steaming pot of tea in our winter jackets, Jess is illuminated by the warm glow of a nearby café terrace. “I’m a Scorpio!” she beams enthusiastically early on in our conversation - after I note...

Meet the bold jeweller who helped Indya Moore commemorate black trans women
Photography by Hannah Turner-Harts
At the New York Fashion Media Awards on the evening of 5 September, star of FX’s Pose and trans activist Indya Moore received the award for Elle magazine’s Cover of the Year and delivered a rousing speech. They did so wearing a striking pair of earrings; a sweeping cascade of miniature gold frames suspended from each earlobe. The individual gold frames held photographs of the 16 (now 18) murdered trans women in the US so far this year. It was a stirring spec...
The niche perfumer creating scents from her Swedish-Gambian upbringing
Photography via @maya.njie.perfumes’ Instagram
The first time I meet Maya Nije is at a perfume-making workshop in Covent Garden, at the invitation of a mutual friend. Maya commands the class as we learn the basics of fragrance formation – starting with the base notes, followed by heart notes (the main body of the perfume), and the top notes to complete the full package. I leave with my own perfume creation, a velvety mix of rum vanilla, patchouli and musk.
Fast forward 10 months later and we ...
